> What is Catchball?

Catchball is known by many names (Newcomb ball, Cachibol, Kadureshet..) is a team sport similar to a simplified version of volleyball, with modified rules and a focus on inclusion and fun. The sport was started in Israel about ten years ago and has become the most popular sport among adult women in the country, with nearly all the players over 30 years old.

> How many players are on a Catchball team?

 Catchball teams typically consist of 6 players per team on the court at a time, but teams often consist of 8-16 players depending on preferences of the league or group.

> Can anyone play Catchball?

Absolutely! Catchball is designed to be inclusive and accessible to women of all ages and skill levels. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or new to team sports, Catchball provides an opportunity to have fun, stay active, and connect with others.

> Do I need any special equipment to play Catchball?

Local teams are outfitted with soft balls, similar to volleyballs, and a carrying bag, as well as a wheeled caddy.  Individual players wear comfortable athletic attire and footwear, as well as knee pads to ensure safety and mobility.

> How is Catchball different from volleyball?

While Catchball shares many similarities with volleyball, such as court positions and strategies, there are some distinct differences, primarily that catching and throwing replaces bumping, setting and spiking, allowing players of varying abilities to participate actively.

> Is Catchball a competitive sport?

Catchball can be played in both competitive and recreational settings. Many leagues and groups emphasize the social and fun aspects of the game, prioritizing camaraderie and enjoyment over competition. Bostonet has a range of players from beginners to those seeking a more intense and competitive playing experience.

> How can I get involved in playing Catchball?

Join our league!  Try a pick-up game, stop by a local team’s practice as a spectator, or just email us to find out more.  Currently we have local teams in Cambridge, Brookline and Newton with women from as far as Sharon, Framingham, Jamaica Plain and more.

> Can I play Catchball if I don’t have any prior sports experience?

Absolutely! Catchball welcomes players of all experience levels. The game is designed to be inclusive, and many leagues and teams provide a supportive environment for beginners to learn and develop their skills. Bostonet offers a series of beginner clinics and pick-up games that are appropriate for players of varying levels.  Regardless of your point of entry, Catchball offers an opportunity to have fun, meet new women and sweat a little with a group of local moms.
